| Today's
medical costs can be overwhelming if you should experience an
unexpected illness or accident without health insurance coverage.
The out-of-pocket expenses for being uninsured are far greater
than the money you will spend on a monthly premium. Finding
a good group health insurance policy can be one of the best
ways to get the coverage you need without having to spend more
than you can afford. Consider
Your Medical History
Before you begin
shopping for low cost group health insurance, think about
your overall medical history. If you have suffered from a
chronic illness, or visit the doctor often, your insurance
premiums will be higher than if you are usually healthy. Group
coverage can be less expensive because the insurance company's
risk of having to pay for health procedures is spread across
a larger number of people, some who are healthy and some who
are sick more often.
HMO or
PPO?
The basic types
of low cost group health insurance are HMO and PPO coverage.
In an HMO system, the premiums are lower but your control
of which doctor you see is far more limited. The HMO will
have strict guidelines for which procedures are covered, and
will usually require that any specialty procedures be recommended
by your primary doctor. With a PPO plan, you have a wider
range of doctors to choose from, but your monthly premium
is a little higher. You are basically paying for the right
to choose your doctor and the treatments when you use a PPO
plan.
